Examples of Sheffield Data Protection Breaches

Sheffield Automatic Number Plate Recognition Breach

In April 2020, both Sheffield Council and South Yorkshire Police took responsibility for investigating a data breach which left the details of thousands of motorists available to be accessed online. The mass surveillance system had recorded millions of records which were accessible without a password online. This information, if in the wrong hands, may have been used for all manner of criminal activity.

Sheffield Hallam University Data Breach

In May 2020, Sheffield Hallam University confirmed that it was one of over 20 charitable and educational institutions that fell victim to a global ransomware attack. Names and contact details for alumni, donors, and other stakeholders were held to ransom as part of the attack on the cloud computing provider Blackbaud. Although no financial details were held as part of the attack, Blackbaud paid the ransom and then chose to not disclose victims of the breach until months after it had occurred.

Sheffield Council Data Breaches

231 separate data breach incidents were logged by Sheffield Council in 2019/2020. 92 of these incidents were confirmed to be personal data breaches, the majority of which involved customers and were the result of human error. These breaches typically involved the Council sending personal data to the wrong recipient either by email or post. From those 92 personal data breaches, 5 were considered serious enough to be reported to the ICO. Incidents included parking fines being printed double-sided, which led to 140 people receiving the personal data of other people.

How much will it cost me to make a data breach claim in Sheffield?

The cost of making a data breach claim in Sheffield is the same as it would be in any other part of the UK. Most data breach solicitors take claims on a No Win No Fee basis which means that you won’t pay anything if the claim is unsuccessful. Solicitors will work on a conditional fee basis, usually taking a percentage of the compensation you receive as their payment for the legal work.
