Examples of London Data Protection Breaches

Ritz London Data Breach

In August 2020, the Ritz London made a public statement regarding a serious cyber attack that compromised their clients’ personal data. Whilst hackers weren’t able to access financial information, they were able to use the personal information gathered from the attack to launch a targeted phishing campaign against those affected. One individual lost £1,000 as criminals gained access to her credit card details and racked up charges at Argos.

Greenwich University Data Breach

In 2018, the University of Greenwich in London was fined £120,000 by the Information Commissioner’s Office. The names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, signatures and physical/mental health problems of 19,500 students was placed online. The information had been uploaded for a training conference in 2004. No action was taken to secure the data or close down the site after this though.

Hackney Council Cyber Attack

In October 2020, Hackney Council reported being affected by a serious cyber attack. Many of its IT services and systems were affected. The ICO confirmed that they had received a data breach report from the Council and the National Cyber Security Centre also said they were consulting with the London-based council regarding the impact of the cyber attack.

Marriott Data Breach

The Marriott International data breach took place between 2014 and 2018, compromising over 300 million personal data records around the world. It wasn’t until August 2020 that a London class-action was brought forward by millions of affected individuals against the international hotel firm. The data breach was one of the largest in history and led to the ICO fining the company £99.2 million pounds. It’s estimated that 7 million British people were likely to be affected by the data breach.

FAQs

What should you do if you've had your data breached?

If you have discovered that your data has been breached then you should contact a data protection solicitor as soon as possible.  A specialist data breach solicitor will be able to show the full extent of damages that you may have suffered and can help you claim compensation from them. Most solicitors can get the information you need over the phone, or by email, so you should be able to start a claim from wherever you are, whether you live in London or any other part of the UK.

How much will it cost me to make a data breach claim in London?

The cost of making a data breach claim in London shouldn’t be more or less than making a claim from anywhere else in the UK. Data breach claims are usually taken on a No Win No Fee basis. Solicitors will work on a conditional fee basis and take a percentage of the compensation awarded as their payment, once the case has been settled. In the eventuality that the case is not won, then the client doesn’t pay anything. Due to the nature of this agreement, solicitors will only take on cases that they are confident in winning.
